Logan looked up at the kitchen window, which Nick was about to close.

“I’ll get something in a minute,” Huey promised.

“You’d better hurry,” Logan nodded again toward the kitchen.

Huey nodded hello to Carla and Glenda, seemingly undecided.

“Go ahead,” she said, “I’ll wait here. I’m sure they have some left.”

“Okay, but wait here,” he said. “I’ll be right back.”

“It’ll take me a while to work my way through this anyway,” she grinned, slicing down with her spoon to load it up with just the right balance of vanilla bean ice cream, brownie, and hot fudge sauce.

By the time Huey returned, Logan was sitting by herself. Glenda and Carla had already gone back to work, to escape—as Glenda said—‘all that computer gibberish.’ The two women found technology useful, but only as a tool. They did not enjoy the technical underpinnings that so fascinated Huey when he talked shop.

Logan waited for him to take a few bites of chili before asking him what he wanted to talk with her about. Something was obviously on his mind. Huey glanced around the dining hall before answering, and even then, he spoke in a low voice. Nick and Brittany were the only ones still here and they were back in the kitchen.

“Remember that backup drive I showed you this morning?” Huey asked.

“Sure,” she said, unconsciously lowering her own voice. “Monica’s, right? Did you get into it?”

“I probably shouldn’t have, but, yes, I did,” he said.

Logan leaned over, “Why, what was on it?”

“First,” Huey said, wiping his mouth and taking a sip of water, glancing up at the kitchen, where Brittany was wiping down the exterior counters.

“You almost done?” he said to Logan, not answering her question. He stood up to bus his tray, having taken only a few bites of his chili.

More than intrigued, Logan quickly scooped out the last of her sundae, licked the spoon, and hurried to follow.

When they got back to the lab, Huey sat them both down in front of his computer and placed his hand on top of the hard drive sitting to his right.

“After you left this morning, Stacie called to update me on a project I’d been helping her on. I asked how the investigation was going—if she got anything off Monica’s technology. She said the detectives still hadn’t found the phone; they were waiting on the phone records. They did bring her the victim’s computer, but it was a lost cause, too damaged to get anything off it.”

Logan looked at the black box under Huey’s hand, the remaining source of information about Monica’s life. He must have found a way to fix it.

“So, this is it, then. Any luck?” she asked.

“Unfortunately, yes” he said. “Turns out it wasn’t broken, just needed an updated device driver.”

Logan waited for him to explain. Whatever had been on Monica LeGrange’s computer was the woman’s own business. But something was upsetting Huey. She hoped it wasn’t what she thought it might be.

“First, I checked her emails,” he said. “Looking for any she may have sent or received the day of the murder.
